GCC Strategizes to Tackle Ageing Population Surge

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) recently held a symposium in Muscat to address the increasing challenges of an ageing population, expected to reach 30% by 2050. Titled “Following up on the Implementation of the Arab Strategy for the Elderly: Potential and Challenges,” the event focused on strategies to enhance elderly support systems and ensure a dignified life for seniors.

Prioritising Digital Inclusion

Recognising technology's pivotal role, experts emphasised digital inclusion as a means to empower seniors, improve social connectivity, and provide access to essential services. Training programs tailored to overcome barriers such as sensory impairments were highlighted as essential for fostering a tech-savvy elderly population.

Saudi Arabia’s Senior Care Initiatives

Saudi Arabia is actively addressing the needs of its 1.5 million citizens aged 60 and above through initiatives like the Senior Citizens Privilege Card and localised community programs. These efforts aim to uphold dignity and ensure a secure, inclusive environment for older adults.

UAE’s Community-Based Programs

The UAE is advancing eldercare through innovative initiatives under its national policy for senior citizens. Programs like “We Are Your Family” leverage community engagement to offer support during emergencies and enhance overall care.

Understanding Regional Trends

Data from the GCC Statistical Centre revealed that the elderly population reached 2.6 million in 2023, 4.5% of the total population. This is projected to rise significantly by 2050, underscoring the urgency of robust policy development. A study, in collaboration with the UN Population Fund, is also exploring seniors' realities to craft evidence-based solutions.

Collaborative Strategies for the Future

The symposium underscored the need for collective action among governments, communities, and organisations to create sustainable eldercare systems. Emphasis was placed on integrating human rights into policies and scaling initiatives through partnerships to ensure the well-being of the region’s ageing population.

Through targeted efforts and regional collaboration, the GCC strives to meet the challenges of demographic shifts while fostering a society that values and supports its elderly citizens.
