The Challenge
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global health systems, highlighting the critical role of primary health care (PHC) in responding to emergencies. As the world continues to face various health challenges, strengthening PHC preparedness is essential to ensure resilient and effective healthcare systems.
A European Initiative
In response to this need, the WHO Regional Office for Europe, in collaboration with the WHO European Centre for Primary Health Care (PHC) and the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs, organised a workshop in Tallinn, Estonia, from November 26-28, 2024. The workshop aimed to:
Enhance PHC preparedness: Equip PHC practitioners with the necessary tools and knowledge to respond to emergencies.
Facilitate knowledge sharing: Create a platform for participants to exchange experiences and best practices.
Identify gaps and challenges: Pinpoint areas where PHC systems need strengthening to ensure continuity of care during crises.
Key Focus Areas:
Practical Simulation Exercises: Participants will engage in hands-on simulations to practice their response to real-world emergencies.
Interprofessional Collaboration: The workshop will foster collaboration between PHC professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and community pharmacists, to ensure seamless care delivery.
Effective Communication: Participants will learn strategies for effective communication and coordination within the health system and with the community.
Resilient PHC Systems: The workshop will explore ways to build resilient PHC systems that can withstand future crises.
The Road Ahead
This workshop marks a significant step towards strengthening PHC preparedness in the European Region. By empowering PHC practitioners and promoting collaboration, we can ensure that our health systems are better equipped to respond to future emergencies.
Key Takeaways:
The importance of PHC in emergency response
The role of technology and innovation in strengthening PHC
